Sustainability at the Eurovision Song Contest

We believe that music and sustainability can go hand in hand. SRG and the host city of Basel are working closely together on the Eurovision Song Contest. Together, we want to make sustainable decisions in the organisation of the Eurovision Song Contest: ecologically, socially and economically.

What we are doing – for a sustainable Eurovision Song Contest

The canton of Basel-Stadt has developed a sustainability concept for the Eurovision. This will serve to minimise the ecological impact of the event, integrate social issues (such as inclusion, diversity and violence prevention) and reconcile both with economic objectives.

The Eurovision stands for diversity, openness and active inclusion

Our goal is to create a celebration for everyone – regardless of physical, sensory or gender requirements. This means, for example:

  • Barrier-free venues for wheelchair users
  • Special offers for people with sensory impairments
  • All-gender toilets
  • Targeted training in the tourism sector – for example on racism, disability or LGBTIQ issues
The Eurovision in Basel should be a place where everyone can feel safe and protected.

The Eurovision should be as safe a space as possible for everyone – and where violence and hostility occur, those affected and those around them should receive professional support as quickly as possible. That is why Host City Basel-Stadt is offering round-the-clock assistance from specialists directly on site during the Eurovision via a 24/7 hotline, safer spaces at the venues and mobile awareness teams. These services are free, confidential and sensitive to discrimination. They are based on networked cooperation and training for those involved, such as volunteers, catering staff and private security personnel. This innovative project is supported by federal funding and is intended to provide impetus for other events in the future.

Culinary delights meet sustainability – both are on the agenda at the Eurovision in Basel.

The catering at the Eurovision offers a wide range of culinary delights to suit every taste. It also sets a high standard for sustainable and enjoyable food that is good for people, animals and the environment.

  • A high proportion of the food comes from within a 150 km radius
  • At least 75% of all offerings are vegetarian or vegan
  • Reusable tableware is used for serving food and drinks
  • Food waste is avoided through various measures at the event venues: these include variable portion sizes and the donation of surplus food to local food save organisations.
  • In addition, over 200 public fountains provide free fresh drinking water along the way.
Full steam ahead – climate-friendly, convenient and direct to the Eurovision!

Getting there is the biggest lever for a better carbon footprint – and that’s exactly where we come in:

  • Public transport is already included in many tickets. Anyone travelling within the North-Western Switzerland (TNW), Lörrach Regional Transport Association (RVL) or Distribus areas can travel to and from the main event venues by bus, tram or train at no extra cost.
  • In addition, SBB is running around 115 extra trains, and city trams and buses are running more frequently and for longer than usual.
  • For night owls, there are also Eurovision Nightlines – so that everyone can get home safely, relaxed and in an environmentally friendly way after an unforgettable evening.

More about transport

Less waste, more impact – for an Eurovision that closes the loop.

The event will focus consistently on waste prevention. Various measures will be taken to achieve this:

  • Disposable products such as flyers, single-use containers and giveaways will be avoided wherever possible.
  • Decorations will be predominantly reusable or recyclable.
  • The majority of temporary structures and materials are rented, shared or reused.
  • Only reusable cups are used.
  • Volunteers supervise waste collection points, while ‘Sustainability Heroes’ ensure that waste is sorted correctly on site. Various recyclable materials are collected separately, weighed and recycled.
  • The waste management concept is designed to be inclusive: barrier-free and separate waste disposal is available at many locations.

Green Motion Label

Grünes Herz

The Eurovision 2025 is sincerely committed to sustainability and accessibility. SRG SSR is working hard to reduce the ecological impact of the Eurovision Live production. Guided by the Green Motion label we are taking positive action through more than 100 measures in all areas of the production to reduce our CO2 footprint: Energy, mobility, accommodation, catering and materials & waste – even the costume design is supporting this effort.

We have taken all necessary steps to ensure physical accessibility to the venues. In addition to that, technology is our friend to enhance the accessibility of the content of the show. This year, we will provide the live audience with super-fast streaming services, which enable everyone to connect on their own device to different streams: Audio Description, Text to Speech and Sign in French, German and Italian will be available.

Be part of this journey! Help us to reach our milestone in sustainability by becoming the first SRG SSR TV production to achieve the Green Motion label and to set a strong sign for inclusion through our accessibility initiatives. Together we build the legacy of the Eurovision and can have a huge impact!

Basel: Climate neutral by 2037

Basel pursues an exemplary sustainability policy and has set itself a net zero target for 2037. This means that the city offers the best political and structural conditions for implementing the Eurovision 2025 in a sustainable manner. To name just a few examples relevant to the event:
Basel offers 100% green electricity, a strong tri-national and climate-friendly public transport system, bike sharing and many cycle paths, is Switzerland’s largest Fair Trade Town, promotes sustainable nutrition, is committed to waste prevention, recycling and resource conservation,
and introduced mandatory reusable tableware in 2015.

Quality of life for all, today and in the future

Even independently of the Eurovision, the canton is committed to sustainability:

TourCert

Since December 2024, Basel has been certified as a sustainable destination according to the internationally recognised TourCert standard. Basel is thus the second Swiss city after Zurich to receive external sustainability certification according to the criteria of the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council).
